The best way to fund it is through a bank debit card; the money goes in instantly and without fees.

That’s strange, I have gas as my 5% category and paid at Costco Gas but didn’t receive cashback. I assumed the problem was it being a PIN transaction, but your experience suggests otherwise.

I haven’t used it for gas. But that’s good to know. I used it for groceries in-store with my PIN.

They accept any debit or PIN card.

Costco only accepts VISA for credit card transactions. All debit cards from any network are fine. You must use the PIN for debit transactions, you can’t swipe as credit, it won’t work.

Mobile wallets support major payments too, if you want to pay with Amex through Apple Pay or Samsung Pay. I considered it but I’m wary about mobile tap-to-pay security. I guess that puts me in the minority because I only trust my Fidelity Visa and its chip. Costco Customer Service

From what I’ve gathered, it seems they did earn 5% for in-club, but I’m not sure about gas.

What I meant is that you can’t earn on both, since in-store purchases count as groceries while gas purchases count as gas.
In the past, people thought they were in the same category since they’re both from Costco, but that’s not right.
All warehouse club gas stations are categorized as gas for credit card rewards.

Right, but 5% on gas is offered by some Visa credit cards, though I don’t know of any that provide that rate at wholesale clubs. You could certainly achieve 5% on both with different cards.
