I’m considering opening a new credit card and wanted to get some personal recommendations from you all. I’m particularly interested in hearing about which credit cards or issuers you’ve had the best experience with. Please include the reason for your response.
Amex. Customer service is the best in the industry.

Definitely Amex. CapitalOne was not great. Chase is fine. But Amex has always been the best when I needed anything.

Really? I’ve only had great experiences with C1.

May depend on your issue or card on hand, but I never got anyone from the U.S. when I was with them. Always someone where communication was too fast and not as well as it could have been. While the issues were usually addressed, it always seemed to take longer and more effort than with Amex. So it was fine, but definitely not great in my experience.
@Masitsa
Oh, that might be it. I’ve only had a VX which I think gets better CS.
@Masitsa
Chase Freedom customer support is usually just fine, but any time I call their sapphire customer support I feel much more cared about lmao

Was about to say something similar with Amex. If you have any of its charge cards, Amex CS is great. Its credit cards are more YMMV, depending on which one you have. Delta CCs tend to get the worst CS of Amex, but that’s more dealing with Delta than Amex.
@Charlotte
I’ve always had great experiences with CS on the Blue Cash, BCE, and BCP.
@Masitsa
Capital One has been great for me!
Amex, Chase, and CapitalOne have been great. No issues whatsoever.
Citi on the other hand - I’m contemplating deactivating my card once this stupid verification letter arrives by snail mail in 7-10 business days. They flagged my new card for fraud when I tried to add it to Apple Pay and have been nothing but condescending since. I see why they are called Shiti Bank now.
@Olen
Yup, they did that to both of my new Citi cards in the last month.
I have really only been in the Amex, Chase, and BofA systems and they are all fine. I just recently received a Verizon Synchrony card–jury is out on that one.
But these three have been very good at just delivering a stable credit card product with decent benefits. Customer service has been great, and the occasional bad charge or lost card has been handled promptly and with a good outcome.
We had a legitimate Hertz rental car damage claim with Chase, and it could not have gone smoother. Sent the info to Chase, and they took care of it.
My wife ordered something online and it ended up being sort of a scam where they charged you monthly and kept sending the product. Very difficult to contact the vendor to cancel, so we disputed. BofA was familiar with the scam and gave us a back-end customer service number for the vendor to cancel. Problem solved quickly.
Only bad issues I have had over almost 40 years were:
-
Chase did not give me some spend bonus they advertised on the United Club Card. It was only $100 and I did not want to fight with them.
-
Amex customer rep gave me bad info and told me I could transfer Delta points back if needed, which was not true. I don’t typically fly Delta. Hours of time on the phone with Delta and Amex back and forth. Story not worth it. I now have a fair amount of points trapped at Delta. I called Amex customer service and asked for some sort of retention offer as a 37-year member of gold or platinum (never asked for anything before), and the answer was some BS if I spent a bunch of money blah blah… No thanks and always looking for ways to extract value now from Amex. I just did the 20,000 points for whatever the pay-later program is, which I will never use. So I have some of those back.
But all three of these have been fine for many years. Just sad to see the decline in Amex in many ways, not just customer service (people make mistakes), but travel services are a shadow of what they used to be. So while people may say that Amex has good customer service, it does, but not compared to the past.
These are not intended as rants, OP asked for details.
WF my first/oldest card/checking account set up was nice and easy. Capital One has my favorite website and app designs/layouts I’ve used so far.
Amex and Discover CS are my fav. Either via the app or phone, these two have always been top-notch and handle issues quickly imo.
Chase. Easy enough to get a hold of, and easy to resolve issues with.

Second Chase. Phenomenal app. Business cards and personal cards under one log in. Easy to use and no bullshit with offers/benefits. UR are pretty easy to use and the CSR makes them valuable. Easy to get approved for many SUBs.
Wish they had better lounge access but all lounges are getting overcrowded anyways.
I’ve been through every bank at this point and Chase has just been a consistently superior experience all around.
Amex customer service is worth its weight in gold. Don’t think I’ve ever needed to wait more than 30 seconds to reach a real human being. They’re knowledgeable, competent, and able to help with everything from the smallest question to the biggest problem.
I’ve had good experiences with pretty much all of them:
- Discover
- American Express
- Chase
- Citi
- FNBO
- Comenity
- Capital One
- Wells Fargo
- U.S. Bank
- Elan Financial Services
- Bank of America
Amex and Chase might be the best of the bunch, but only by a small margin.
Among all of them, I’d say FNBO is probably the weakest (partly because it can be a pain to log into their website a relatively high percentage of the time), but I have no major complaints about any of them.
Discover. My only fraud incident ever was with them and it was handled immediately.
