“Unusual” credit cards to pair with or replace part of Chase Trifecta?

Random thought that popped into my head. The Chase Trifecta is often touted as one of the best ways to rack up a lot of UR points. But sometimes we hear about people who use other cards to complement and/or replace part of the Trifecta like those who also carry a Venture X, a World of Hyatt or Southwest CC.

Curious, what cards do you use alongside your Chase Trifecta or Chase Duo and why? How does it complement your strategy and/or goals?

Not sure if this is considered as “unusual”, but as a frequent shopper at Amazon, adding the Chase Ink Cash makes it a quadfecta.

This allow me to get 5% UR points, by Amazon gift cards (or other stores) at Office Supply stores (i.e., Office Depot). In addition to my phone and internet bill.

Have a bias at Hyatt hotels, so I value it a ~2cpp.
So effectively getting 10x on those multipliers.

@Dior
Not unusual at all, but a great strategy if you don’t mind managing gift cards.

You should have a 5% groceries card (CCC, AAA daily) or a 3% uncapped groceries card (Amex BCE). Chase trifecta is a very incomplete setup by itself bc of that massive blind spot IMO.

The sapphire preferred can get 3x points at many grocery stores that allow you to pay via an app. It often codes as “online.” I’ve used it at Publix and Whole Foods.

@Zayn
True. To me, it seems super niche but online grocery usefulness may be a largely regional thing.

I do agree overall though. The Chase trifecta lacks grocery and even gas. I have the preferred and currently use it because I’ve found this grocery hack and I only shop at Publix and Whole Foods. I can’t do it with the reserve which is what’s holding me back from getting it.

@Zayn
It kills me so much that the preferred does not have a gas multiplier. Gas is a huge part of travel. It also kills me that none of the Chase trifecta cards include groceries too. Like why do I need two cards with the drugstore multiplier? They need to refresh the Freedom Unlimited and the Chase Sapphire Reserve honestly.

@Caius
They gotta make their money somewhere. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Chase is aware of the gap and has intentionally kept it that way.

If you look at every ecosystem, there is always a gap somewhere.

Only solution is to stay diversified… :face_with_monocle::point_left:t2:my flair.

@Tru
:sweat_smile: you’re right but it still sucks!

Yes, it does suck lol.

I snagged the 10x sub on groceries for CFF for 1 year and I’m just dumping at least $1K/mo gift cards that should last me 2-3 years so I got that category technically covered :joy:

I also bought tons of gas gift cards from the grocery store.

@Caius
Just some suggestions if you’re looking to fill that gap (and sticking primarily with a travel setup) - a lot of the mid-tier hotel cards (IHG One Rewards Premier, Hilton Honors Amex, Marriot Bonvoy) have gas as good multipliers. The Hilton also has groceries as a multiplier if you don’t want to do the app trick for groceries and/or need a card for those places that don’t have an app that will trip mobile pay. And all of those offer a free anniversary night that will pretty easily offset the AF.

The Citi AAdvantage Platinum / Alaska Airlines Visa (Oneworld Alliance) and United Business (Star Alliance) cards are airline cards with gas multipliers if you fly with either them or their partners often.

If you’re looking for something with some overlapping transfer partners with UR you can look at like the Citi Strata Premier (Overlaps with some useful ones like Flying Blue, Virgin Atlantic, JetBlue; earns at gas/grocery stores/hotel/EV charging; has a $100 annual hotel benefit to offset the AF) or the Wells Fargo Autograph (overlaps with Flying Blue, British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus; earns on gas/cell phone plans/travel/transit; no AF); unfortunately neither overlap with any of the Chase hotel partners though.

@Caius
People always say ‘Chase points are worth the most’ (because of Hyatt) but never ‘Chase points are the hardest to earn.’

Chase Sapphire gives 3x on online purchases?

Yea, I just googled it and didn’t know that! Next quarter I will be using my Chase Flex but good to know for the future!

@Zayn
By restricting yourself to Publix and Whole Foods, you are paying about double what other grocery stores charge. I’d rather keep that money. I also notice the Publix app is very unresponsive unless you have a strong Internet connection. That could depend on where the Publix is located.

@Terry
Also works for Kroger stores and their other store brands they own.

@Terry
The Publix app just spinning when I’m trying to open it up at the register is the most annoying part, lol. I always try to make sure I connect to the store’s wifi and open it up well before I get close to the register.

BCE is capped.
