I started a checking, savings, and brokerage account about two weeks ago. After some time, I decided not to pursue the credit card and canceled the accounts. I wasn’t confident in their security to house my money. Honestly, their technology is slightly better than my local credit union, which is embarrassing. If they want high-net-worth customers, they need to improve significantly.

What specific security concerns did you encounter?

The 2FA they offer is quite basic—essentially just a text message every time I log in, without any recognition of my browser. The brokerage setup seems outdated; you can’t even reinvest dividends without calling them. I couldn’t find any info on rolling over securities from other brokerages.
They locked my account due to logging in from multiple IPs—I logged in from work; why is that a problem? I had to go through several representatives to learn that’s what happened. I went to the branch to cancel the accounts, and the staff were friendly but couldn’t unlock my account. I suggested changing my password and username in person, but they said my account was simply ‘flagged.’ No one could tell me why. They also had several outages in just two weeks.
@Nevin
You started by saying the security was lacking, then complained they secured your account due to suspicious activity. There seems to be more to this story regarding getting it unlocked.

Companies bad at security often become overly cautious. If you’re going to lock my account when there’s suspicious activity, that’s good, but please inform me of that. I never received a 2FA alert during the entire ordeal, and a lot about their service felt subpar.
@Nevin
Yikes, that sounds frustrating. Definitely leaves a bad impression.

Why not consider Bank of America instead?
You probably already have a Bank of America Preferred Rewards account.
The 4% cashback appealed to me, and I thought US Bank would offer better service. However, I realize most of my family with them are older, and I guess US Bank suits them.
I’m waiting for approval on my card before transferring assets but already opened a savings and checking account (no fees since I have a US Bank credit card). Plus, there’s up to a $450 bonus for opening the account. I applied for Smartly yesterday and called underwriting today, but they were too busy to update me, so I have to wait.
@Kimberly
Did you check for pre-approval before submitting your application?

No, I didn’t know pre-approval was an option. I’m fairly certain I’d get approved based on my credit history. Unless they have some unusual restrictions, I didn’t want to transfer assets before getting approved.
@Kimberly
FYI, US Bank usually doesn’t like too many recent accounts and inquiries. I was glad they had a pre-approval feature, which saved me from wasting an inquiry.

That’s possible. I opened two new cards recently, but that was after not applying for years. I do have two Cash+ cards with them already.

What’s your x/6, x/12, and x/24?

I think it’s 2, 0, 0. My last card was about three years ago.
I’m curious too. I decided to move my assets first to possibly help with my application and limit. Not sure if that makes any difference, though.
I read that for California, they pull Experian. My score is 836, and my wife’s is 850. Just trying to smooth out the process.
I’m wondering if moving assets would help with reconsideration. I applied for the Altitude Reserve and got denied. Currently trying for a manual review. I could open a checking account and deposit $10,000 if I want.
@Landyn
Might as well take advantage of that; there’s a nice signup bonus going on: https://www.usbank.com/splash/checking/2024-all-market-checking-offer.html
