Should I Apply For the Freedom Unlimited

Hi everyone, I am debating whether it is possible for me to get the Chase Freedom Unlimited. My reason for wanting this card is that I want to start earning points and I don’t really want a Freedom Flex because I have a Discover card already and it kinda does the same thing. The second reason is that I wanted to start getting into the Chase ecosystem. What are your thoughts/experiences?

Edit**: Would it be better to get the Flex before the Freedom Unlimited? I heard it might be a better point earner.

Current cards:

  • Discover Student Cash Back ($500)
  • FICO Score: 690

Oldest account age: 1 year 1 month

Income: $40,000

Average monthly spend and categories:

  • rent $750
  • groceries: $100
  • other: $100

Open to Business Cards: No

If your rent can be paid by card you might consider a 2% card instead.

I disagree. A 5% grocery card would be better. Rent will charge him 2-4% in fees for using a credit card unless is the Bilt one

You don’t spend much, but check Amex BCE. It might be a good fit for you instead.

Freedom unlimited is a good choice regardless

Do you think I have a good chance of approval for freedom unlimited because I would like to earn chase ultimate reward points.

@Porter
I say you have low chances. But chances still.

If denied, call chase reconsideration line for a manual inspection of your application

I just applied earlier today and got accepted. My score was and average of 735 across all 3 bureaus. Honestly depends when you opened your last card

How recent was your previous card because I got my discover card like 2 months ago so this would probably be an issue…

@Porter
I got the Amazon prime visa on August 9th 2024. Applied nearly 2 months later and got approved for a 3000$ limit.

Oh alright. The thing is Discover It is my very first card and my credit age and score are both relatively new. The 1 year credit age I have is due to a student loan I took. I am worried they might reject me.

@Porter
You can use there pre approval tool. Might help with your decision

When I used it, it said I had no current offers lol

@Zach
Ahhh, I see. Do you think I should try getting added as an authorized user before applying to boost my credit score.

That’s what I had my dad do. I’m an authorized user on his card and a co owner on another one. Helped boost my score then applied for 3 cards by myself and got approved for all of them

@Zach
Okay, will do.

@Zach
Did you have a Chase account prior to applying? I heard that if you had a Chase account prior to applying you have a higher chance of approval.

Get the CSP then downgrade it to a CFU after a year

This sounds smart. I highly doubt I’d get approved for a CSP rn tho

How long have you had your discover student card?
