US Bank Altitude Reserve: 1-Year Review – Is It Worth It?

I’ve had the US Bank Altitude Reserve for just over a year now, and I absolutely love it. With a $75 effective annual fee, it offers impressive benefits, including 3x points on Apple Pay purchases, which translates to 4.5% cash back on travel when redeemed. Apple Pay is widely accepted, making this benefit quite valuable. The card also provides travel protection and purchase coverage, which adds extra value.

While I initially sought a single, versatile card, the USBAR has proven to be an excellent daily driver. It’s especially advantageous for those who use Apple Pay frequently, as you earn 3x points on many everyday purchases. For online shopping, the card’s 3x points on Apple Pay transactions make it a standout choice.

Despite its high annual fee, which can be offset with points redemption, the card’s benefits like lounge access, TSA PreCheck, and comprehensive insurance coverage justify the cost. The absence of travel partners is a minor drawback, but the flexibility of earning rewards on various purchases compensates for it.

Overall, if you use Apple Pay and don’t travel extensively, this card is a great option. Even for those who prefer other payment methods or travel frequently, it still offers considerable value.

Believe me, I wish I could simply “just get it.”

If you have a different USB card, I highly recommend calling them to upgrade. There’s no hard pull involved. They might mention missing out on the SUB, but don’t worry about that. When I upgraded my Cash+ card to the USB AR, I called three times to see if I was still eligible for the bonus, since the info in the box suggested I might be.

Sure enough, when my card upgraded, I found the bonus tracker in my app and received the $500 bonus as if I were a new applicant. It’s a great deal, and now I’m considering getting another Cash+ card for my utilities.

The real question is whether you can still qualify for a bonus if you already have a Reserve card and are considering upgrading to another one. I’m interested in trying, but it doesn’t make sense to have two Reserve cards.
