Recently, my girlfriend noticed about $300 in unauthorized Amazon charges on her credit card, even though she hasn’t used that card for Amazon or made any purchases in the last three months. We’re going through the chargeback process now.
The weird thing is, we have no clue how it happened. It wasn’t from her Google Pay purchases since those are tokenized and use a virtual card. Her physical card has never been stolen, either.
I suspected it might be a skimmer when she tapped her card at a vendor during a local anime convention, but I thought tap-to-pay had one-time use protections. She also hasn’t entered her card info on any sketchy websites.
So, I’m really curious if anyone has ideas on how her card could’ve been compromised. Could it have been a sketchy tap at the con? Was it an RFID scanner? Any insights would be appreciated! Just for reference, it’s a Canadian card used in Canada.
Dfntly keep a close eye on your statements! If it was a skimmer, she should be aware of it. Also, you might want to consider getting alerts for transactions over a certain amount.
En sure she changes her Amazon password and enables two-factor authentication. It could help prevent any future issues, even if it wasn’t from Amazon directly
It’s wild how vulnerable we can be with tap-to-pay. Have you contacted the credit card company yet? They might have more insight into the unauthorized charges.
Sounds like a real sketchy situation. Did you check if the vendor uses secure payment methods? Sometimes smaller vendors might not have the best security.
I’ve heard of people getting their cards skimmed at events like that. It’s scary how easily it can happen. Make sure she keeps an eye on her accounts for a while!
That’s really concerning! Tap-to-pay skimming can happen, especially in crowded places like conventions. Maybe check if there are any reports of skimming at that vendor?
