I just paid all my debt and my credit score is at 585. I get denied for everything and have no way to build my credit

Try to save a few hundred bucks and apply for a Discover secured. Discover is a great option for those who don’t have great credit, no credit, or rebuilding. They offer great rewards as well without fees.

@Amani
I have $2k right now in my Chime, do you think I can go ahead and try that?

Does Chime have a secured credit card?

Not that I know of but I can call in the morning and ask :slightly_smiling_face:

Before you try secured, look at Chase Freedom Rise. That’s a really good option. They approved me at 580 even after having multiple lates with Affirm, which was reported to Experian (A credit reporting agency). They gave me a $500 limit and then increased it to $2000 after 6 months, and I’m coming up on 12 months where they will upgrade me to Freedom Unlimited. They’re very lenient as far as I can tell and you won’t need a deposit, but your chances of being approved are higher if you have $250 in a Chase checking account. It’s stated on the website that if you have any relationship with Chase, they’ll most likely approve you on the spot.

@Freddie
That’s the credit reporting company that was mentioned on my report I just got from Affirm so I might check it out since our situations are really similar. Thank you.

First of all, you should figure out what the ‘debit card’ is in your second sentence. A debit card wouldn’t have a limit. Is it a secured credit card? A refillable prepaid with a limit?

If it is NOT a secured credit card, that would probably be the first step in your credit recovery. Unfortunately most companies that offer secured credit know their customer base is desperate and have awful terms more akin to loan sharks and payday loans than a real credit card. Realistically you should only be looking at Discover or Capital One secured cards. You should be accepted to either with your score.

Once you do get the card, all you can do is keep using it until your score starts to go up and you can apply for a non-secured CC or get a different kind of loan.

@Fane
Respectfully I know what a debit card is. It’s connected to a checking account with whatever money I have in said checking account. It was a typo…

My first and only CREDIT card had a $1k limit and I’ve edited the post.

@Tali
Then as long as the card company is not a bad one, you should just keep using that one to build credit until you can get a starter non-secured one. If you have a recent history of delinquencies it is pretty unlikely you will get approved for a non-secured unless it’s from a very shady company like Credit One.

Secured credit card may be your only option.

Hey, as long as it’s something, I don’t mind. Anything I can get approved on to start reversing my screw-ups is good enough for me :slightly_smiling_face:

Try Discover or a local credit union credit card.

You can get a Step card. It’s like a secured card as far as your credit shows, but it acts like a bank account. You can direct deposit your paychecks, earn rewards, redeem rewards, etc. You can also buy and sell stocks in fractional share sizes, etc. No fees at all. Highly recommended.

@Marcell
I haven’t heard of a Step card, any specific one you recommend?

Discover secured card is the one who gave me a chance when I was brand new to credit.

I second the recommendations for secured cards with Discover or Capital One. I’d also strongly suggest checking out credit unions. If any parents, grandparents, or siblings were ever in the military, Navy Federal is a great option.
