Does Becoming an Authorized User Count Towards the 5:24 Rule?

I was added as an authorized user on my partner’s AMEX Gold and Amazon card back in July. Considering that, I’m right at the 5/24 limit and will need to wait until a few inquiries fall off before I can get new cards. However, if those accounts don’t count against me, I would only be at 3/24. I’m curious if they affect that rule or not. Both companies did hard pulls. Additionally, I want to get my own Amazon card later on. Will being an authorized user prevent me from obtaining it and the associated sign-up bonus?

It will count for auto-denials, but you can call the reconsideration line and ask them to overlook it.

What does that mean?

You apply and get denied for having too many new accounts in the last 24 months (5/24). You then call reconsideration and explain that two of those new accounts are just AU accounts, meaning you aren’t financially responsible for them, and request that they reconsider your decision.

Ah, ok.

This is correct. My wife and I are authorized on each other’s cards and I was denied because of 5/24 status due to 2 of her cards. I called and explained the situation, and I was approved immediately. It took less than 10 minutes.

This is the only answer.

If you apply for a Chase card, you will get denied for being over 5/24. If you call reconsideration and explain that you are an authorized user on 2 of those cards, they’ll verify this and should then approve you, as those accounts shouldn’t impact your 5/24 status.

@Lilly
I’m planning to apply for a Chase card eventually but will wait until one of the 5/24s falls off. Just wanted to clarify for future reference.

You should be in good shape in that case. If you apply for a non-Chase card beforehand, it could put you at the 5/24 threshold again, but that call to reconsideration should sort that out.

It does not count towards the 5/24 rule.

It does in their automated system, but you can call for reconsideration and a human representative will manually exclude it.
