Closed Belk Credit Card and Was Told I'd Never Be Approved for a MasterCard Again?

Hello…I had a Belk credit card that I impulsively signed up for back in October 2022 to buy some clothes. I paid it off in the same billing cycle and never touched it again. The card was through Synchrony Bank.

Since I don’t really need it (I’m much happier with my Discover card), I decided to call and cancel the Belk card. They went ahead and closed the account, but not before warning me that I would never be eligible for another MasterCard again. Honestly, that sounded petty and ridiculous to me, and now I’m left wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Has anyone else been told something like this when closing a store card, especially with Synchrony Bank? Is this just a scare tactic or something more serious? I’d appreciate any insights

That sounds odd and probably just a scare tactic. Closing a store card like the Belk one shouldn’t affect your ability to get another MasterCard in the future. If you’ve had good credit habits overall, you should be fine. Other people have likely encountered similar warnings when closing accounts, especially with Synchrony Bank, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
