Cashiers and Servers: What Are the Top Credit Cards You See?

I was a cashier 10 years ago before I joined this lifestyle. Would’ve been fun to scope out the credit cards that people carry.

I’d imagine there’s a ton of debit cards, but what are the top credit cards?

I’ll hazard a guess in this order: Chase Freedom Unlimited, Quicksilver, Double Cash, Discover It, Blue Cash Everyday, Amex Gold.

A surprising amount of physical Apple Cards.

Lmao imagine getting 1% on non-category or even category spend.

The average consumer doesn’t know or care. Also, if everyone used the highest earn rate cards, they’d also have to slash those earn rates as it wouldn’t be profitable. Chase/Amex definitely rely on churners/YouTubers to promote their cards to people who won’t maximize the value.

@Vann
This. There’s maybe like 1% of people (like on this sub) that actually think about maximizing rewards with their payment methods. Most people are content with just getting an Apple Card or Discover It and using it for everything.

@Wylder
It’s not about maximizing rewards. If you know enough to know the Apple Card exists, why you would want it instead of another, apply for and get it, then you should at least be smart enough to tap instead of use the physical card. Except we all know people choose Apple because complex thought is difficult.

@Wil
Are you saying they are getting the Apple Card because of the ‘prestige’?

No, more so that they are brainwashed by Apple to seek out Apple products. If they think that gets them ‘prestige,’ then sure. But it’s really hard to make the case that the Apple Card is the best card choice for anyone. So, Apple card holders are the epitome of suckers for marketing.

@Wil
I have an Apple Card that I keep on my phone. I use it where I can get 3% cash back, like Walgreens.

You can get 3% at Walgreens with a Chase Freedom Flex along with every other drugstore, and it has 5% rotating categories, additional cash-back card offers, and the Chase Ultimate Rewards shopping portal. You could get 4.5% on every tap-to-pay with the USBAR instead of the Apple Card. (Yeah, it has an annual fee, but if you spend $1666 your points already cover the fee.) Or you could get a Kroger card for 5% on tap-to-pay (yeah it’s limited but earns 2.5X what Apple tap-to-pay earns.) For 2% cash back there is a seemingly endless supply of cards all with various benefits that would most likely be worth more to most people than the benefits of the Apple Card, and they work with or without tap-n-pay which doubles the cashback of the Apple Card when not using tap-n-pay. I can all but guarantee that even for someone who just wants one card, that the Apple Card is not the best choice for getting cashback, for benefits, or for simplicity.

@Wil
There is a simplicity factor of the Apple Card that everything you need to manage the card is built into the wallet - even the accompanying HYSA.

@Wylder
Talk about leaving it on the table.

Nah that’s just the cash tips.

@Wylder
Especially when you could get double that just by tapping instead.

Very locale dependent. In my locale, there are still a lot of restaurants and bars that you can’t use Apple Pay (or any mobile wallet, or even physical tap of the card for that matter). I’ve also noticed even at places that are set up to tap, if the server/bartender etc. is handed a physical card, they will insert the chip far more often than tapping.

@Dev
Yeah, in my area (suburbs of Atlanta, GA) almost every table service restaurant won’t have an option to tap. When I was in the UK everywhere brought a reader to your table, but I cannot think of any place I frequent that has this. I think Olive Garden does but I mostly eat at local places. One time I was with a friend who forgot his wallet at a Thai place. He asked if he could use Apple Pay and this led to bringing out a manager and weaving him through to the back of the kitchen where their register was in an area they were clearly uncomfortable with a customer coming. I guess they were worried he wouldn’t pay otherwise.

@Vann
Probably since it has no numbers they feel like it’s better security when it leaves their sight. They might not care for the rewards, just knowing no one can take the numbers. All that security marketing Apple does.

@Charlie
Pretty sure it’s less about security and more because it’s Apple and it’s metal. Lol.

Yeah, there’s the shiny toy factor with that card. Some people here say they’ve had fraudulent card charges based on restaurant staff copying the card number. The crafty ones hide a mag stripe card skimmer and record the CVV elsewhere. The physical Apple Card has no printed CVV and the CVV can even be changed on the phone. Even if the physical card was skimmed they would have trouble using it without the CVV.

It’s about the numbers. The number mason.
