I just wanted to share a frustrating experience I had with Capital One.
I’ve been with them for 6 years, spend thousands on their cards each month, and have multiple accounts.
To make a long story short, I got double charged for a subscription service. After asking the company for a refund, I got an automated response saying they wouldn’t issue one. I couldn’t open another ticket, and they didn’t have a real customer service line.
So, I contacted Capital One and explained the situation. I showed them the double charge from the same company at the same time. This was my first chargeback in over a year.
A month later, Capital One closed my case, saying I didn’t provide enough proof of the double charge. I called customer service, but they said there was nothing they could do.
Now I’m out $120 because Capital One won’t help. I’ll be closing my account and moving to AMEX tomorrow.
If you’re going to criticize Capital One, you should say what subscription service this was. The company is the one responsible, and it might explain why Capital One rejected the chargeback.

A $120 subscription service with no customer service? That sounds sketchy.
It’s not porn. It was a child device monitoring app I bought through Google Play, which requires a yearly subscription (ironically, it’s meant to block porn). Google Play double charged me for the subscription, and their customer service is terrible. The app maker doesn’t handle the charges since it goes through Google Play.

I reversed a Duolingo charge through Apple. Duolingo said they couldn’t refund since it was through Apple, but Apple had a refund option that processed quickly. Maybe Google Play has something similar?

It wasn’t porn. It was a child device monitoring app through Google Play. I paid for the subscription, and then got charged again for a ‘renewal,’ which didn’t make sense since I had just paid. I even had emails showing the issue. Google Play’s customer service is awful, and the app maker doesn’t handle the charges.

Chargebacks on Google Play can be tough since they deal with a lot of fraudulent disputes. Try escalating to a manager at Capital One or go directly through Google for a refund: Learn about refunds on Google Play - Google Play Help
This can happen with any company, whether it’s AMEX, Citi, or Capital One. You could try filing a CFPB complaint or escalating with Capital One, but no bank is perfect.

Make sure to vote for lawmakers who want to keep the CFPB well-funded!
