When I applied for the card, the ability to borrow/spend $1000 seemed worth the $175 fee. But circumstances changed, and now I have other cards without fees.
I called Milestone to cancel because of the fee, and they said it couldn’t be waived because I’ve used the card (and paid it off), but I believe it’s still within 30 days. I’m wondering if they’re legally required to refund the fee if cancelled within 30 days. I’m in Maryland if that makes a difference.
Credit card companies are required to provide a refund if you cancel within 30 days of opening the account, but this usually depends on the card’s terms and conditions. Since you’ve already used the card, it’s worth double-checking the cardholder agreement or contacting customer service again to clarify their refund policy. If needed, you might also consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) for further assistance.
I had a similar situation. Got a card, thought the fee was worth it, then found no-fee cards. I called to cancel but they said no go on waiving the fee since I used it, even though it was within 30 days. I’m in Maryland too, and after some digging, found out they’re not legally required to refund it.
