Best Credit Cards for Movie Theater Subscriptions

What’s the best credit card for getting tickets and using for a movie theater subscription?
I watch at least 8 to 12 movies a month. I have AMC Stubs A-List and Regal subscriptions. I want to maximize the points I earn from the subscription and for booking tickets if someone joins me.

I usually use the Chase Freedom Unlimited, but I’m wondering if there’s another card that could give me more points or cash back. I saw that Capital One SavorOne offers 3% back on entertainment, but does a movie theater subscription and ticket bookings count as entertainment?

I typically use the points for travel, so are Chase points or Capital One points more valuable? Are there any annual fee cards with more valuable points that I could use?

I know that movie theaters count as entertainment with SavorOne. Have you checked the merchant category code on a past transaction to see how it’s billed?

US Bank Cash+: You can pick 2 categories each quarter for 5% cash back and one 2% category. Movie theaters are one of the 5% options.

Wells Fargo Attune offers 4% cash back for movie theaters.

Do you think Wells Fargo Attune is worth it? I have a relatively new credit history (2 years) and it looks good with so many cash back options, but I’ve heard mixed reviews about Wells Fargo.

@Sullivan
I have 3 different cards with Wells Fargo, and I’ve had no issues.

@Sullivan
They’ve improved their reputation. They’re much better than Comenity or Synchrony, and that’s coming from someone who has a Synchrony card.

@Sullivan
Wells Fargo Active Cash was one of my first cards. I was hesitant to use them at first. After a year, I had my card number stolen at a gas station. Wells Fargo’s fraud detection quickly flagged the charges, and my experience with their fraud claims team was very positive.

I’ve since shifted from cash back to points, but my experience with Wells Fargo has been good, and I’d consider going back if their points cards had more transfer partners I like.

SavorOne gives you 3% back.

Citi Shop Your Way has a 10% back offer on entertainment from August to December this year.

Elan Max is a subsidiary of U.S. Bank and issues cards similar to Cash+:
Elan Max Cash Preferred - 5% On Two Categories - Doctor Of Credit.

This PDF lists some entertainment categories (like movie tickets): https://card.myaccountaccess.com/credit/elanmicro/pdfs/categories_max_cash_preferred_visa.pdf

I get 3% cash back at our local movie theater, so AMC would probably do the same with SavorOne.

Wells Fargo Attune has lots of 4X categories, including entertainment, but I don’t have that card to confirm.

Both are no annual fee cards, by the way.

Are Chase points or Capital One points more valuable? Does Capital One have the same transfer partners you use with Chase UR points?

Choice and Wyndham are not great hotel chains, so that’s a no for me on value. Sorry, Capital One fans.

Check if they accept Apple Pay and consider getting a USBAR or Kroger card. Every movie theater I’ve visited accepts mobile wallets for food and other purchases too.

They said they prefer points over cash back (USBAR).

5%

  • Cash+ for streaming and movie theaters
  • ELAN Max Cash for streaming and entertainment

SavorOne offers 3% cash back on entertainment, including AMC theaters.

The Chase Ink Business Cash card (Frequent Miler link breaking the card down) is a $0 annual fee card that gives you 5% back on office supply purchases. You could use it to buy AMC and Regal gift cards from office supply stores to get 5% back on entertainment purchases. (EDIT: You can’t use gift cards to buy A-List subscriptions according to their terms.)

I would check if Staples sells gift cards for both theaters and order them online to get the codes emailed to you.

You have three options:

  1. SavorOne is best for general use with travel points.

  2. AMC card gives effectively 5% back (15% total for you) and some other perks, but only useful at AMC.

  3. USB Cash+, or a similar category choice card that gets 5%.

SavorOne gives 3% back and the entertainment category is broad, so movie theaters are included.

There are other cards that offer 4% or possibly 5%, but if you want to keep it simple, I highly recommend sticking with Savor since it also gives 3% on dining and groceries.

I relied on that card in my early to mid-20s.

Edit: You can transfer the earnings from SavorOne to Venture X as miles. They make a strong combo.

I use the BofA Customized Cash Rewards (Platinum Honors) for 5.25% cash back on online shopping for my AMC A-List subscription. Online shopping also works for app purchases of tickets. If you don’t have Platinum Honors, you’ll get 3% back on online shopping, which is a broad category for BofA.

US Bank Cash+ gives you 5%. Movie theaters are one of the two categories you can choose.
