I’m looking for a card that has a good cashback percentage on gas (including gas at Costco) and Costco itself. Originally I was leaning towards the Citi Costco, but the thing that’s holding me back is that the card will close if I ever end my membership. I have restaurants somewhat covered (Chase Freedom Unlimited 3% cashback), and one other top spending category via Citi Custom Cash 5% cashback, usually groceries or gas depending on what I spend the most on that month. Plus my Discover student card that has rotating categories every 3 months that gives 5% cashback as well.
Edit: Since Citi Custom Cash is basically a flex category between gas and groceries, I’m also open to groceries + Costco cards as well!

I use the Venmo Visa at Costco. I think it’s important to mention that you only get 3% back on grocery if that’s your top spend category. Your second top spend category is 2%, and everything else is 1%. And that’s for the pay period.
Costco shows up as grocery, even when I’m buying a pizza at the food court… even buying a washing machine would count as grocery… up to you whether that’s a good thing or not. Gas at Costco shows up as gas. Same thing for Sam’s Club for anybody wondering about that.

I actually heard really good things about Redstone FCU and that was going to be my alternative. But I also heard rumors that the card will eventually get nerfed because of how mind-blowingly good it is.
@Sadie
I think the project geolock was the nerf. The card is a money-making machine for us for dining, gas, Walmart, discount stores, and club warehouses.

USBank Smartly if you have 100-250k laying around and don’t mind storing them in USBank. It gives you 4% back.
Unfortunately I don’t have that kind of money laying around.
I guess I should mention that I just graduated fresh out of college, paying off my loans next month, and started my full-time job a few months ago with an income of $60k.
??? You’ll also be unable to shop at Costco or use its gas pumps if you end your membership, so why is that holding you back from getting the Citi Costco card if your goal is “good cashback percentage on gas (including gas at Costco) and Costco itself”?
@Josie
Apologies. I was thinking if I end my membership and lose the Citi Costco card, then I will lose out on having a gas card. I would still like to have a gas card handy if I were to ever cancel my membership.
But since I still have my membership, I would like a card that includes both gas and Costco.
@Sadie
In that case, any gas card can replace it, since Costco will no longer be a consideration. In the meantime, I don’t think there is any single card that is as good for both gas and Costco as the Costco card.
