Been with BOA since I was 16 (mostly out of habit lol). Just wondering why their credit cards don’t seem to be as popular as Chase or Capital One. Anyone got thoughts on this?
Their cards are great if you reach their top rewards levels, but they don’t get much hype because they don’t have a referral program. Chase and Amex pay bloggers and YouTubers to push their cards.
Only got one because they pre-approved me with a $300 bonus. Their mobile app is kinda ugly though.

Autopay setup is a mess. I heard there’s a way to fix it with bill pay, but I haven’t tried.
@Dare
Yeah, their system is ancient. My autopay got turned off just because I made an early payment?! And if you pay before autopay, they still charge you. Also, refunds don’t adjust the autopay amount. Not the worst thing, but annoying. I only keep my BOA card for the 3% on online shopping.
@Gentry
I got their CCR as my first card because I bank with them. Thinking of getting a new card—mostly use it for online shopping (3% CCR) and Apple Pay. Any good alternatives? Looked at Amex Gold, seems useful for Uber and GrubHub, but not sure if I’d use the $100 Resy credit since I don’t eat out much.
@Dare
There’s no workaround. The only way to set up autopay is through bill pay. That’s just how it is.
@Dare
They make it complicated on purpose. Late fees and interest make them too much money to change it.

Costco Citi Visa app is better, but still miles ahead of the SYW MasterCard website. That thing doesn’t even have an app.

Still better than Wells Fargo tho.

Nah, even Wells Fargo makes autopay easier to set up than BOA.
I have four of their Cash Rewards cards (set to online shopping, travel, dining, gas). I get 5.25% back on almost everything. Even groceries get me 3.5%. Best cashback system out there… but you need $100K+ in their accounts to unlock that level.
Chase and Amex pay influencers to push their cards. BOA doesn’t.

Even US Bank doesn’t get much love. People barely talk about their Cash+ 5% utility or USBAR. Same with the PayPal debit 5% categories.
If you’re a Platinum Honors member and prefer cashback, BOA is solid. But that requires $100K with them. Chase and Cap One are better for travel since they let you transfer points to airlines.
2.625% max cashback vs. 4% from US Smartly or 4.5% from USBAR. Not really worth it IMO.
They don’t have competitive travel cards, no transfer partners, and no real travel perks. Most credit card fans are focused on travel rewards, not cashback.
Nobody promotes BOA because there’s no referral bonus. That’s it. Bloggers and YouTubers won’t talk about a card unless they get paid.
- No strong travel rewards program
- No referral program
- Not great customer service
- Requires a lot of money in their accounts to get good rewards

Yeah, the need to keep large amounts of cash with them is what makes their cards less appealing to most people.
